< PreviousWomen In Business 28 FRIDAY, 18 NOVEMBER 2022 For Julie Gallant-Cumber, giving back comes with many rewards. As a long-time volunteer, she says it not only helps build the community but gives a sense of meaning as well. “Volunteering is one of the most rewarding things one can do in their life,” she says. “Everything we do connects us to different people and circumstances and keeps spreading out. So much opens up when you get involved in the community.” Julie has been involved in a myriad of organisations and events, from fundraisers to fostering, since moving to the Cayman Islands from Canada in 1994. The Cayman Islands Humane Society is particularly close to her heart. She began by fostering three puppies when she first moved here, later becoming more involved in fostering, dog walking and assisting with fundraising efforts. Most recently, she became a board member with the Humane Society. “I’ve always had a great love of animals,” she says. “With animals, the reward is seeing them in a loving home and thriving, knowing what their outcome could have been.” It’s that sense of making a difference – large or small – that keeps her going. “Volunteering, on any level, is very rewarding,” she says. “You feel a sense of doing something that makes a difference in a life, lives or the community. There is a sense of meaning in volunteering, no matter what the work is.” When it comes to helping with fundraising events, one of the rewards is knowing people are enjoying the occasion. “I had organised many fundraising movie nights for the humane society, and watching the children come in with their classmates or friends and enjoy a great movie for a good cause is a nice feeling,” she says. “It’s a win-win.” She helped stage the Cayman Charity Auto Show, an official Queen’s Platinum Celebratory event, putting on the free community event with a team of six. It raised funds for several local charities, and to great success. “There is a huge amount of work involved in a big fundraising event, but the end result is well worth it,” she says. Julie is the operations manager at the Auto Spa Car Wash on Godfrey Nixon Way. Much like her volunteer experience, she has worked in a variety of fields – from the restaurant industry to fund management. She says volunteering gives her an opportunity to gain hands-on experience, learn new skills and make connections. “For women, it’s a chance to make a difference, show their value, their strong qualities – like organisation – and make bonds with other women who share the same values,” she says. Volunteering has also given her a new perspective. “You look at things differently. You learn to be very grateful for the small things in life,” she says. “I look at the life my rescue dogs now have and think about how their life could have been, and that there are so many out there who are not so lucky. “It drives you to keep going and want to do more and more. It is the ‘making a difference’ in a life, no matter whether it’s a person or an animal, that gives that great feeling. There is a contentment to it.” MAKING A DIFFERENCE Volunteering helps build the community, connect with others.Women In Business 29 FRIDAY, 18 NOVEMBER 2022 Janelle sheow-Rivers WE ALL START OUT THE SAME, BUT THESE WOMEN HAVE BECOME OUR LEADERS. The founder of MOD Realty says the industry not only allows for fl exibility, but has given her the opportunity build her own business. “I enjoy real estate because I get to meet a lot of people who end up being life-long friends,” she says. “I love being part of the construction process and decision making, so I can make choices based on the needs of my clients and current trends.” In the real estate business for nearly 10 years, Athena founded MOD Realty in 2019 as she felt there was a lack of diversity in the industry, particularly Caymanian representation. She also wanted to focus more on digital and social media marketing over traditional models. A mother-of-two, Athena enjoys the camaraderie and supportive environment at MOD Realty, which has an all-female staff. “We share so many relatable experiences and solutions amongst each other,” she says. “I believe in women supporting women.” She fi nds there are some gender-related advantages when it come to the business, as she believes women can bring a certain level of trust to the industry for their clients. “Being family-oriented, I can relate to an array of purchasers or sellers, whether it’s a fi rst-timer, couple or family with children and pets.” There are also some advantages to being a ‘homegrown’ agent. “I know this island like the back of my hand,” says Athena. “I grew up in a traditional Caymanian community. I know the neighbourhoods. I’ve watched most of Cayman’s best-known properties built from the ground up.” NATURAL TALENTS Athena became involved in the real estate industry more by chance than design. During an interview for an accounting position at a local brokerage, she was told mid-way through that, rather than focus on the fi nancial side, she would be ideal for sales. “It’s safe to say that real estate found me,” she says. It’s a career that suits her personality and interests, as well as her ambitious and competitive nature. “I have a natural sales spirit,” she says. Although the demanding hours can be challenging, Athena tries to maintain a work-life balance. “I feel it’s important… to remember you have a life outside job your title.” Despite the challenges, she enjoys working in an industry that taps into her natural talents and energy. “I’m naturally a giver, so I appreciate being a part of a career where I can help people and provide solutions.” PURSUING HER PASSIONS The MOD Realty team, from left, Stephanie Foster, Hortencia Jackson, Athena Nicole and Elisha Hydes. Who are these people and what do they represent? The answer is dependent on your unique lens i.e. the eye of the beholder and presents itself in many possibilities when compared from one person to the next. There is no wrong or right answer and in fact the diversity in our perspectives is infi nitely valuable especially when we can use it to generate discussion and bring awareness to common misperceptions and the extent of their impact. So back to the question, what do you see and why are we questioning it? As a female leader, recently appointed to a Managing Director role, I have experienced some surprising comments that stem from a subconscious bias as to what an ‘MD’ should be, owing to perceptions around gender. In this picture, I see nine talented and successful business professionals stood beside me. You are looking at Chartered Accountants, Chartered Insurers, a Certifi ed Catastrophe Modeler, Chartered Certifi ed Accountants, and a Mergers & Acquisitions Specialist. You are seeing people who have bachelors and master’s degrees in law, accountancy, insurance, business administration, organisational business & psychology. Why is any of this important? Why do we need to highlight the qualifi cations and experience and capabilities of women? A 2022 study by McKinsey & Company entitled ‘Women in the Workplace’ demonstrates that women outnumber men at entry-level positions but representation decreases signifi cantly in more senior roles. For every 100 men that are promoted, just 87 women are promoted. At Artex, we are delighted to take this opportunity to highlight the successful women of our offi ce and their contributions to the fi nancial services sector. 5 WAYS THAT YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE TO BREAKING THE BIAS: 1. Discover the diversity and inclusion agenda within your workplace; 2. Seek to recognise behaviours that marginalise women and fi nd solutions to address them; 3. Share your experiences and be receptive to others; 4. Interrupt biased behaviours and promote the importance of equity; and 5. Champion female success as a use of positive discrimination in a bid for equity.
