As Vice President – AML Reporting and Compliance Client Services at Intertrust, Sabine Calvetti’s days are always busy. In her role, she oversees Intertrust’s AML Reporting and Compliance Services offerings. These include the effectiveness of client entities’ Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) systems; compliance by clients; applicable AML/CFT legislation and guidance; as well as the regular operation of the clients’ AML/ CFT policies and procedures. But Sabine’s responsibilities do not end there. For, alongside her demanding job, she is also a board director at Meals on Wheels, assisting with the overall direction and leadership of the registered non-profi t organisation which provides free, hot, nutritious meals to seniors in need across Grand Cayman. “My specifi c areas of support include promoting and highlighting the work of the charity, and supporting our annual fundraising which raises much-needed funds to provide meals which are delivered free-of-cost to the seniors,” Sabine explains. MEALS ON WHEELS The work undertaken by Meals on Wheels is so desperately needed, and the charity works extremely hard, often in the background, to cook and deliver nutritious meals. “We operate four community-based kitchens that cater to the dietary needs of our seniors, and who cook 335 meals each day. These meals are then delivered by a daily team of 30+ volunteers,” explains Sabine. “Without this hot meal and hearty soup, many seniors would not have access to nutritious food or even a visitor. We deliver so much more than just a meal, we deliver smiles!” Sabine recognised the massive positive impact this charity has on the community, both nutritionally and socially, and felt it was important for her to contribute. Her work with them has shown her how something so seemingly simple makes such a huge impact on their lives. “Meals on Wheels supplies many seniors with the assistance needed to retain their self-worth, independence and the assurance of a hot meal,” she says. “Senior hunger and isolation is a major issue for many seniors. Thanks to the social contact provided by our more than 100 volunteers, we offer some relief for our individuals during daily visits. “Through teamwork and dedication, we deliver hot meals, warm smiles and peace of mind, while our volunteers develop lasting friendships with many of our clients.” JUGGLING ACT Fulfi lling a demanding day job, as well as an important charitable role, is not always easy, and Sabine admits sometimes it can be diffi cult to juggle responsibilities. “However, I am also fully aware of the importance of serving others who have been instrumental in forging the path for my generation and other generations to come,” she says. “It is only fair that we provide assistance to our seniors in their golden years as a show of appreciation and respect for their contributions to our society.” Sabine is also fortunate in that Intertrust is fully supportive of her charity work and recognises the importance of community service. Despite the challenges, Sabine encourages other women to get involved in community service, saying it is rewarding in a very unique way, allowing participants to help others feel valued. “Whether through Meals on Wheels or any other local charity, it is essential to give back to those in our community who need some extra assistance in some way,” she says. “The key element to giving back is knowing that you are able to change someone’s life through giving of your time, your talents and your resources, all for the overall benefi t of others.” THE BUSINESS OF DELIVERING SMILES Sabine delivers a meal to seniors. However, successive GEM reports also show female entrepreneur numbers are on the rise, with women trailblazers starting new businesses and running established ones. Kelly Sage is one such woman who is branching out on her own, leaving corporate employment and starting rampd.consulting, offering bespoke executive level HR solutions. “My role includes providing executive support in the forms of standalone HR projects or often longer- term career coaching for the in-house HR team,” she explains. Projects include organisational re-design, effi ciency and process reviews, Human Resource Information System implementation, performance management system design and rollout, and compensation and benefi ts planning. “These are critical aspects of HR and business that are often sidelined for the day-to-day deliverables,” explains Kelly, who believes that HR in Cayman is often viewed as an administrative hub rather than a strategic partner of the business. “Sometimes it’s because there is no appetite at executive level to include HR, and other times it’s because there is a skills gap, and the HR team are just not able to operate at that strategic level.” STARTING FROM SCRATCH Having always worked for big corporations, in a career that was a blend of in-house HR and consulting, the idea of starting her own company was intimidating for Kelly. “Obviously, your pride desperately wants to succeed but self-doubt lingers and there is fear that perhaps the whole idea will be a fl op,” she says. However, the benefi ts, including a degree of independence and autonomy in decision-making, were worth the risk, and ultimately her choice paid off. “It felt liberating to be in control of my own brand and have absolute autonomy over the type of work I would do and the projects that I would be involved with.” Kelly has seen success already, quickly getting busy and relishing in the support she is receiving. “I have also loved working independently and feeling completely responsible for the success or failure of this venture – which is both daunting and exciting.” OTHER INTERESTS Outside of rampd, Kelly’s life is full to the brim, with her husband and two pre-teen sons, as well as her work as co-chair for Girlforce100, which she calls her passion project. “The 100 Women in Finance network and Girlforce 100 committee in particular have become close friends and women that I can rely on in business and in life,” says Kelly. “The GirlForce 100 committee and mentor base is committed to providing the very best experience for the girls and we all invest many hours of our personal time in this programme.” With a master’s in human resource management and a degree in legal studies already under her belt, Kelly also fi nds time to pursue a PhD in industrial and organisational psychology - which focuses on the psychology of individuals in the workplace and the organisation as a whole. “This speaks not only to organisational culture, but also to communication style, hierarchy, design and management style in any workplace,” she explains. “It is a fascinating fi eld of study for me because as I study the theory, I repeatedly watch the real-life scenarios play out in my consulting projects. “I began my PhD because I have a passion for education and believe that your education can and will change the course of your life.” STEPPING OUT AND RAMPING UP SAGE ADVICE Kelly’s top tips for women starting their own businesses: - Be clear from the outset in what you want to achieve. Your business and your daily work is more than a job, it defi nes you as a person and if your daily routine actually serves to energise you and excites you - that is a great privilege and something to celebrate. - Every employee and business owner should aspire to that feeling of being fully engaged as a priority. I have worked in organisations before where I was defi nitely spinning my wheels, but it was comfortable, so I stayed. I would never make that mistake again. - People work for different reasons including earning an income, creating a social network, accessing learning opportunities and to feel included and relevant in the community. Understanding your objectives is critical. For me working with interesting clients, being challenged on a daily basis and the social element of work are top priorities. - Find yourself two things: 1) A network of supporters that you can rely on and that want you to succeed. 2) A mentor that you can bounce your ideas off for a common sense check/reality check. Determined to break out from the offi ce rut, she built on some event experience she’d had in the past; took the leap; and has never looked back. Q: You didn’t start off your career as an event planner, did you? A: Correct. Secretarial work was always my backup plan, [but] it got to a stage when I realised that my backup plan [could] well be my entire life, unless I decided to take a leap of faith. I was blessed with a partner who believed in me and knew how unhappy I was working as a legal secretary. With his support I felt I could accomplish anything. Q: When did you become interested in the event industry? A: Even before coming to Cayman in 1999, I was involved in events in the UK, working bars and clubs and being involved in large functions in London. My fi rst events in Cayman were non-profi t as part of a group called the Grass Skirt Posse. We used to run booze cruises on the Cayman Mermaid and participate in the carnival – it was a lot of fun and something I did in my spare time. Making the move from working in law offi ces to planning weddings and events full time was the best decision I could have made. Q: What training did you have or was it a learn-on- the-job situation? A: Pretty much learn on the job, however, I would say both my years of experience as a legal secretary and my previous event experience was paramount in my success as a detail-orientated planner. I spent six years working for two of the largest event companies on-island, prior to starting Five Star Events. Q: What was it about this work that appealed to you? A: It never felt like work – I literally love what I do, which is predominantly making other people happy! Q: What is one of the most exciting projects you’ve ever worked on? A: All of them! Whether it’s a wedding for two people only, or a huge event, I fi nd them all exciting, especially when bonds are formed with my clients. There is nothing like seeing your vision come to life and the look on our clients’ faces when they see everything for the fi rst time. Q: Have there been any unexpected hurdles over the years? A: Aside of weather challenges, not really… apart from COVID, of course. One thing I will say is that we are truly blessed in Cayman with a host of amazing vendors that all work together to provide a world-class event service. Without these incredibly committed and talented fl orists, photographers, cake artists, rental companies, musicians and DJs, to name a few, I would not be able to do the job I do. Q: What do you love about owning your own company? A: Everything. I don’t have to answer to anyone (I have always had issues being told what to do [laughs]) and I get to be the type of planner that I myself would want if I was getting married or hosting an event. I do everything I can to give my clients the best possible value for money and fi nd ways to not compromise on their vision. It is such a blessing. Q: What advice would you give to other women thinking about starting their own company? A: If you have a true passion for something, then go for it. It is not always easy and you work long hours, but if you love it then it will never really feel like work. JULIETTE HEATH OF FIVE STAR EVENTS: THE DREAM-MAKER Juliette HeathWomen In Business 23 FRIDAY, 18 NOVEMBER 2022 Dream big! Supporting Women in Business since 1982Women In Business 24 FRIDAY, 18 NOVEMBER 2022 Squirrelly Studio products are stocked at GOODNESS, or can be ordered by emailing squirrellystudio@gmail.com or via Instagram and Facebook. Lysha also offers workshops for budding creatives. Juggling three teenagers - Jaydon, Tajh and Kaitlyn; dogs Joey and Phoebe; and a career as manager of private client services team at JTC (Cayman) Limited, Lysha Manderson also runs Squirrelly Studio, specialising in cheerful wooden signs with a Caymanian twist. STARTING SQUIRRELLY “I started Squirrelly in 2016, mainly to give myself a creative outlet,” explains Lysha, who began by making wooden signs emblazoned with quotes for her home. Squirrelly Studios was born from this creative outlet. “At the time, there was no one else doing wooden signs like ours on island and, once we launched, the feedback was, and continues to be, incredible,” she says. “Years later, the support and kind comments we receive is beyond what we could have hoped for.” CHEERFUL PRODUCTS As well as wooden signs, Squirrelly Studio also produces ornaments, stickers, keyrings and drinkware, with the majority of the products featuring bright colours and fun designs. “I’ve always loved the phrase 'Caymankind' and the bright colours make me happy so that’s what I put into my designs and out into the world,” says Lysha. “I want to people to feel happy and uplifted when they receive a Squirrelly product. I want them to feel a connection to our Caymankind and our local authenticity and if we can make them smile that’s sa bonus.” CULTIVATING CREATIVITY Lysha has always had a creative streak. “When I was younger, I wrote short stories and poetry,” says the artisan, who also co-owned a small event planning company for a while before starting Squirrelly Studio. “I’m always wanting to make something, design something, paint something… every now and then I still write also,” Lysha continues. “I don’t really think of myself as an ‘artist’ but more of a ‘creative’ person - very emotional and indecisive but always ready to get my hands messy with something new.” JUGGLING ACT As for how she juggles Squirrelly Studio with a 9-to-5 day job and busy family life, Lysha admits she struggles with carving out down time as she likes to stay busy. “Squirrelly work begins once I’m at home and the kids are sorted! Some nights are very long, and most weekends are spent in my studio,” she says. “You know, you get in that zone, and you just lose time!” Lysha also has her family to thank for the company’s success as it has become something of a family endeavour. “My husband cuts and preps the lumber and the boys have been getting more involved with that side of it also, which is amazing.” FAVOURITE PRODUCTS Lysha’s favourite products are the map signs, which feature hearts where clients’ homes are in Cayman, and many including dotted journey lines leading from other countries. “They are just so personal and tell a beautiful story of that person’s journey,” she says. “I get to hear the backstory for these signs most of the time and I get to create a piece that will hopefully be a happy little reminder of those big life moments.” Word cloud gifts that she has been commissioned to make also bring her happiness, while reading all the beautiful things people say about their loved ones. Leanni Tibbetts, crowned Miss World Cayman Islands on 24 Sept. at the Harquail Theatre, is a shining example of who a modern pageant queen should be. The gracious, elegant young Caymanian, when not wearing her sash, is a pilot for the national airline and a sub-lieutenant for the Cayman Islands Cadet Corps. UP, UP AND AWAY Tibbetts determined that she wanted to become a pilot when she was around 15 years old, but it was an introductory flight with the Cayman Flying Club in 2014 that changed that interest into a burning desire. “I chose to not only obtain my pilot license, but also pursue a bachelor’s degree in Aviation Management with Flight and a minor in Aviation Environmental Science,” Tibbetts says. It took four years to complete her education, graduating from the Florida Institute of Technology in 2019. In early 2022, she joined Cayman Airways Ltd. and finished her training on the Cayman Airways Express twin otter in September. Despite the changing times, it is still a fairly unusual sight to see women behind the controls of an aircraft. Tibbetts feels that they should be encouraged to join the industry, and spoke highly of local support for the movement. “Here in Cayman, we have had three amazing women who have paved the way for female pilots, with me being the fourth,” she says. “Whilst I cannot imagine the [hurdles] those before me have had to overcome to get to where they are today, I am grateful that I now have mentors to whom I can turn for guidance. “It is important for parents and others in the lives of young ladies to let them know that they can get involved and dominate in any area of their life. Just because you don’t see someone like you there, doesn’t mean that it cannot start with you.” CADET CORPS As if flying the friendly skies was not enough, Tibbetts also manages to find the time to serve her country by taking the position of sub-lieutenant in the Cayman Islands Cadet Corps. It appeals to her active nature and love of the outdoors. “I was very interested in all activities that the organisation had to offer – camping, rappelling, and scuba diving, just to name a few,” she says. She is hoping that more women sign up as well, in order to provide guidance to others. “I joined cadets in 2010 and throughout my time, females dominated leadership roles. However, as an adult, there is quite a need for female officers. “I would love to see more women get involved in the organisation and would be happy to guide them in the process. There are so many young people in the [Cadet Corps] who could truly use a mentor or advisor, and you may very well be that person.” MISS WORLD CAYMAN ISLANDS Now that she has won the title, Tibbetts is eager to hit the ground running and work towards some goals she has in mind. “I simply want to be the change I wish to see in the Cayman Islands. Being a community-focused individual, my mission is to show people that if we as individuals did one small thing every day to make our community a better place, we would see a whole different Cayman,” she says. “Whilst this may seem broad, my main areas of focus during my reign will be on climate change and women empowerment.” Tibbetts is strong in her convictions and feels that faith in God and in herself is the true path to success. “The most valuable lesson I have learnt from the pageant is that it does not matter if you are different from those who you see in that arena. As long as you put God first, stay true to yourself, surround yourself with a good team, and be the hardest working person in the room, you will achieve your goals.” MISS WORLD CAYMAN ISLANDS Leanni Tibbetts Women In Business 27 FRIDAY, 18 NOVEMBER 2022 MISS WORLD CAYMAN ISLANDS Leanni Tibbetts Women In Business 27 FRIDAY, 18 NOVEMBER 2022 sponsored content MOD Realty Cayman Islands’ real estate sale agents are a diverse and local team of members.
