< Previous78 WELCOME 79 WELCOME CAYMAN STYLE LISTENING TO LIVE MUSIC is a must-do when visiting the Cayman Islands. Thanks to the large melting pot of cultures, a wide range of genres is celebrated on local stages. From traditional songs passed down through generations to original numbers penned in modern times, musicians have ensured that there is no shortage of tunes for audiences to enjoy. Whether country, soca, reggae, pop, rock or rhythm and blues are your thing, there is likely a musician playing your tunes somewhere on any given night of the week. Aside from one-off special events and concerts (check out page 64 for a few examples), there are many venues on the island that regularly host live music nights. In George Town, White Whale and Stogies often host live acts while Sandbar is also a big hotspot for local artists, as well as numerous DJs during their sunset sessions. The Seven Mile corridor has something for everyone. Check out Jam Nights at The Bird, or settle in at Bevvy Bar to see live bands such as The Neverines, Sugardaddi and Sand Kickers. Peppers has local legend Lammie bringing his strong vocals to the stage, as well as popular groups JR Douglas Band, Los Tropicanos and Native Touch. Nearby Ms. Piper’s has also become a favourite of those seeking out some melodic therapy with the likes of Heat, Alejandro Lemus and Hi Tide, among others. Camana Bay’s bars and restaurants host a variety of acts with Next Door, Union and Agua all having weekly live music. A mile north of Camana Bay, The Hive is a great venue to watch an impressive roster of live bands. Don’t forget about the resorts. You don’t have to be a hotel guest to pull up a chair to the bar and listen to Chris Sanchez, Jeff Japal, Dan Ebanks, and Isadora and Mark, to name only a few. And for those looking for the unique sound of steel pans, head east to Wyndham Reef Resort on Saturday nights. Paraguayan harpist Eugenio Leon, who can elevate a sunset with his command of his instrument, can be found at different restaurants throughout the week, such as Casanova by the Sea. If you’re in the mood for romance, this is the music for you. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at what the Cayman Islands has to offer when it comes to live music, while Mother Nature provides the perfect backdrop. LIVE MUSIC SCENE Dan Ebanks. Left: Agouti Stew.
