OPENING SOONHealth & Wellness 20221 FRIDAY, 21 OCTOBER 2022 This year’s theme is Your Health | Promotion, Prevention & Positive Intervention and will focus on non-communicable diseases (NCD) which are non-infectious health conditions lasting for a long period of time and are also known as chronic diseases. These include hypertension, coronary artery diseases, cerebrovascular disorders, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, cancers etc. Other areas of focus for the conference include occupational health; dental health; disorders affecting the youth; genomic sequencing; and organ transplants. In addition, one half-day during the conference will be dedicated specifically to mental health. “It is this government’s vision to see our citizens not just surviving but thriving,” said Sabrina Turner, Minister for Health & Wellness. “This can only be done in partnership with likeminded persons who are willing to advocate for their personal health by asking themselves and their medical practitioners the important or worrying health-related questions, then taking the positive steps that lead them to better health once they have been empowered with the answers. This conference will help them do just that.” FORMAT The conference will include presentations and panels featuring both local and international healthcare professionals as well as exhibitors from healthcare-related organisations and various charities. Featured speakers include Governor Martyn Roper and Minister Turner along with a panel of experts. In previous years, the event has attracted more than 1,200 attendees. The virtual portion of the 2021 edition, which was a virtual and in-person hybrid due to the pandemic, had more than 8,000 views on the CIGTV YouTube channel over the three days of the conference. The event is free and open to the public. Continuing medical education certificates will be available for each presentation. The conference can also be viewed via live stream on the Cayman Compass Facebook page as well as the CIGTV YouTube channel. Further information can be found at healthcareconference.ky. I am so pleased that this important conference has fi nally returned to its original three-day format. Here we are, open and adjusting to yet another new normal: Living safely and responsibly with COVID-19 in our community. Living safely and responsibly with COVID-19 means utilising all the resources at our disposal to protect ourselves and our most vulnerable. Our biggest asset as we work to end this pandemic remains the vaccine and boosters, without which we would not be able to gather here today. As a ‘once in a century’ global pandemic, COVID-19 rightly captured our time and attention, but in 2022 we are no longer in the same position that we were in two years ago. We have grown, and we have learned, and a signifi cant part of that lesson pointed us back to health threats that we have ignored. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have had a signifi cant and devastating impact on our community for decades. Far too many of us have had fi rst-hand experience with or supported loved ones who have battled cancer, heart disease, and strokes, all of which can result in long- term health consequences and often create a need for long-term treatment and care. It is for that reason that the Ministry of Health and Wellness has shifted its focus to strengthen public health nationally, and in so doing we are spotlighting NCDs. If ours is to be a proactive approach aimed at protecting, promoting and improving the lives, health and wellness of families and communities then the prevention of non-communicable diseases must become a national priority. Our efforts to reach that goal begin today. We often speak about empowerment, and the need for individuals to be willing and able to advocate for their personal health, but rarely do we provide individuals with the necessary tools to take action. This year’s conference – Your Health: Promotion, Prevention, Positive Intervention – is a step to bridge that gap. Our experts, speakers, panellists and presenters will help us understand not only what questions to ask, of ourselves and our health care providers, but also what tangible steps to take based on the answers we receive. It is my hope that as we engage with some of the industry’s leading professionals, and increase our knowledge base at this year’s event, we will become advocates for our health and, by proxy, keepers of our nation’s wellbeing. Enjoy the conference. Hon.
