Making sure you have an emergency plan in place before a disaster, whether natural or other, will save time and reduce stress. All household members will know what to do, avoiding much panic and confusion when a storm or other emergency occurs. IDENTIFY DISASTERS Identify the disasters most likely to affect your region, neighbourhood or home so that you can plan specifically for those emergencies. PREPARE A HURRICANE SUPPLY KIT Assemble your emergency supply kit and first aid kit. See pages 16 and 38. ORGANISE IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS It’s important to keep documents in a waterproof pouch in a convenient place known to all family members. Keep a second copy at the home of a trusted relative or friend. See page 32. HAVE SOME CASH ON HAND Have some emergency cash put away. A hurricane or other disaster could disrupt banking, and automated teller machines, and credit cards may not work. ALLOCATE RESPONSIBILITY Different family members can be allocated preparation responsibilities, if old enough. For example, stocking the disaster kit and taking it in case of evacuation, ensuring family medical or financial information is prepared and ready to grab in case of evacuation. DECIDE WHERE TO STAY For storms and hurricanes, decide beforehand where you will stay. This could be your own home, a friend or family member’s home, or your workplace, depending on where is deemed safest. Have a backup plan for shelter in case you must evacuate. Know where you will go and the best route to get there. Make sure you have up-to-date knowledge of public shelters and emergency medical centres near you. If you do not need to evacuate, shelter in place – do not leave your home unless the situation is life-threatening. Stay away from windows and remain indoors. Do not venture outside for reasons of discomfort or curiosity. PICK TWO MEETING SPOTS Decide what to do if your family gets separated. Have two designated meeting places, one just outside of your home for unexpected events such as a fire or earthquake, and the second outside your neighbourhood, in case you can’t get home or family members get separated. IDENTIFY ESCAPE ROUTES Make sure you know how you would escape from each room in your home, and how you would get to assigned meeting spots. MAKE A PLAN FOR DISABILITIES If you have household members with disabilities or special needs, make sure all aspects of your emergency plan cater for them. CHOOSE YOUR CONTACTS Tell someone who lives outside your area where you plan to be during a storm. It is a good idea to ask someone off-island to coordinate communication in the event of a disaster. Family members should call this person to report their location. Send your contacts copies of important documents, such as ID and insurance. HAVE THE RIGHT INSURANCE Make sure home and contents are properly insured, and that you understand exactly what your coverage provides. PLAN FOR PETS Make sure your disaster plan addresses what you will do with your pet if a hurricane requires you to leave your home. See page 54. PREPARE YOUR HOME Secure items in and around your home before storm-force winds arrive. Trim dead wood from trees and cut back overhanging branches. Check and repair loose gutters. Check your hurricane shutters or plywood covers, and the tools you need to install them. See page 28. Preparedness plan DOCUMENT CHECKLIST • Passport, travel visas or waivers • Immigration records/permits • Emergency contact list and phone numbers • Bank and credit card numbers • Insurance policies • Inventory of valuable household goods • Contracts, wills, deeds • Family records (birth, marriage, death certificates and immunisation records) Are you prepared? Tree Cutting Flood/Water Extraction Fire RestorationEMERGENCY GUIDE 202216 THURSDAY, 2 JUNE 2022 CHECKLIST EMERGENCY SUPPLY KIT An emergency supply kit contains items you and your family may need to survive in the event of a disaster. It can also include a ‘go kit’ which can be taken with you in case of evacuation. Make sure your kit is prepared well in advance, and check your supplies every three months, and before the onset of hurricane season. WATER Aim for at least one gallon of water per person for three to seven days. FOOD Aim for at least three to seven days, non-perishable packaged or canned food and beverages, snack foods, juices and any special dietary items. Include a manual can opener. FIRST AID KIT Purchase a kit or assemble one yourself. Key items include pads, adhesive tape and alcohol-based hand sanitiser. See page 38. CLOTHING Include rain gear, extra clothing and sturdy shoes or boots. MEDICATIONS Have at least a two-week supply – preferably a full month – of any prescription medication. PERSONAL HYGIENE ITEMS Include toiletries, soap, shampoo, toothbrush, feminine products, toilet paper. FLASHLIGHTS Do not use candles and be sure to include extra batteries. HEAVY DUTY GARBAGE BAGS These are useful for cleaning up debris and or household garbage, the collection of which could be disrupted. DISPOSABLE KITCHEN ITEMS Include paper plates, utensils, cups, paper towels. The less dishes to wash, the better. BATTERY POWERED RADIO In the event of a disaster, radio may be your only way of accessing important notices, advisories and news. Be sure to include extra batteries. CASH Banks and ATMs may not be open after a disaster. Have some US cash on hand, as well, in case you need to leave the island quickly. CELL PHONE WITH CHARGERS Include a backup battery; a solar charger will also come in handy. In addition to the usual hurricane supplies, the Cayman Islands Red Cross advises people to stock up on personal protective equipment (PPE) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Public shelters will have these items in supply but it’s best to have them on hand in the household. COVID-19 SUPPLY CHECKLIST Face masks Hand sanitiser Protective gloves SHELTER KIT REMINDER The Red Cross is reminding the public to bring all appropriate supplies for staying at an emergency shelter. He noted that after the Red Cross shelter opened for emergencies four times in 2020, some people did not take certain essential items. The public are reminded to: • Have enough food for their stay; non-perishable items are ideal • Take their prescribed medication • Take personal bedding and clothing, if required COVID-19 SUPPLIESOTHER ITEMS TO CONSIDER: • Blankets, pillows • Special-needs items and food supplies for infants, elderly and disabled family members. • Eyeglasses, contact lenses, hearing aid batteries • Pet care items, including food • Toys, games and reading materials • Non-electrical cooking source, such as a gas or charcoal grill or propane camp stove • Tools • Extra set of house and car keysHurricanes Storm surges Earthquakes Volcanoes Tsunamis www.caribbeanalliance.com • Tel: +1 (345) 949-9744 Anguilla • Antigua & Barbuda • Ascension Island • Bahamas • Barbados • British Virgin Islands • CAYMAN ISLANDS • Dominica Falkland Islands • Grenada • Montserrat • St. Kitts & Nevis • St. Lucia • St. Maarten • St. Vincent & The Grenadines • Turks & Caicos Get FULL Home Insurance Coverage against perils. The Cayman Islands National Weather Service has two main sources for seasonal hurricane prediction: The Colorado State University and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). CSU called for 19 named storms and nine hurricanes, four of which are expected to strengthen to major hurricane strengthen of Category 3, 4 or 5. According to the 30-year climatological mean, which runs from 1991 to 2020, an average Atlantic hurricane season consists of 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. “Sea surface temperatures averaged across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic are currently near average, while Caribbean and subtropical Atlantic sea surface temperatures are warmer than normal,” read the forecast, in part. “We anticipate an above-average probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the continental United States coastline and in the Caribbean.” CSU bases its hurricane season predictions on models that use 40 years of historical data and evaluates conditions, including: • El Niño • Sea surface temperatures • Sea level pressures • Vertical wind shear levels (change in speed and direction of winds with height in the atmosphere) • Other factors The 2022 hurricane season’s activity will be about 130% of the average season, according to the CSU forecast. Last year’s hurricane season saw about 140% of the average season. This year’s hurricane season is exhibiting characteristics similar to 1996, 2001, 2008, 2011, 2017 and 2021. All had above-average hurricane activity, per Phil Klotzbach, research scientist in the Department of Atmospheric Science and lead author of the report. EARLY STORMS POSSIBLE The official start of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season is 1 June, running to 30 Nov., but the season has started early for the past seven consecutive years, with the first storm developing either in April or May. Therefore, early preparedness is key to avoid being caught off-guard. “For example, Tropical Storm Alberto formed in May 2018 and Tropical Storm Arlene formed in April 2017,” said John Tibbetts, director general of the Cayman Islands National Weather Service in a report last year. Each year, the Cayman Islands National Weather Service forecasters adopt the predictions from CSU and NOAA, which will release its 2022 hurricane season projections in late May. CSU will revise its predictions in the first few months of the season, with updates expected on 2 June, 7 July and 4 August. DID YOU KNOW? • The word ‘hurricane’ comes from the Taίno word ‘huracan’, which simply means ‘storm’. Taίno is an Arawak language from the Caribbean, and ‘huracan’ was picked up by Spanish explorers in the region centuries ago. • Hurricanes in the northern hemisphere rotate counter- clockwise, while cyclones in the southern hemisphere rotate clockwise. • Major storms in the western hemisphere are called hurricanes, while those in the eastern hemisphere are called typhoons. • The Saffir-Simpson Scale was created by engineer Herbert Saffir and meteorologist Robert Simpson in the 1970s. Although originally solely based on wind speed, Simpson added storm- surge levels later on. • The hurricane with the highest wind speeds on record was Hurricane Patricia. Located near Western Mexico, it reached sustained winds of 215 mph on 23 Oct. 2015, before dramatically weakening later that same day. However, it still made landfall with winds of 150 mph.
