Stages of Development: Upon enrollment, applicants will immediately begin a four-year programme on the path to becoming a Power Line Technician. Starting out as a Power Line Technician Apprentice I, applicants will undergo important safety training and on-the-job training. Power Line Technician Apprentice I (first year): Apprentices will primarily assist Power Line Technicians with a number of activities. In some instances, apprentices will be required to work overtime. Power Line Technician Apprentice II and III (second and third years): Following the first year of service and if the apprentice is deemed to have performed his/her duties as expected, the apprentice will be promoted to Power Line Technician Apprentice II and subsequently to Apprentice III in the third year, gaining valuable on-the-job training as well as assigned technical classroom and safety training along the way. Power Line Technician Apprentice IV (fourth year): If successful over the three years, the apprentice will be promoted to Power Line Technician Apprentice IV and will be assigned new responsibilities. Continuing in the programme, qualified and successful apprentices eventually become Power Line Technicians, where they can expect to construct, maintain and repair overhead and underground electric power transmission and distribution systems. CUC is recruiting young Caymanians to join our four-year Power Line Technician Apprenticeship Programme What does a Power Line Technician do? Power Line Technicians primarily erect and maintain wood and concrete poles and guy wires; install, maintain and repair overhead and underground power lines and cables, insulators, conductors, lightning arrestors, switches, transformers, street lighting and other associated equipment; while working with various types of heavy equipment. When there is a power outage, Power Line Technicians locate the source of the problem and replace or repair defective power lines and accessories. Salary and Benefits: Power Line Technician Apprentices can earn between CI$2,389 and CI$4,521 per month. A Power Line Technician may earn between CI$3,879 and CI$5,042 per month. Power Line Technician work is most rewarding for those who are technically inclined, enjoy working outdoors in all weather conditions and enjoy developing specialised skills at challenging tasks.
